Extreme storms in Southwest Asia (Northern Arabian Peninsula) under current and future climates

چکیده

Precipitation extremes will generally intensify in response to a warming climate. This robust fingerprint of climate change is particular concern, resulting heavy rainfall and devastating floods. Often this intensification explained as consequence the Clausius–Clapeyron law warmer world, under constant relative humidity. Here, based on an ensemble CMIP5 global models high-resolution regional simulations, we take example Southwest Asia, where extreme storms beyond Clausius- Clapeyron scaling, propose additional novel mechanism for region: unique increase atmospheric humidity over Arabian Sea associated deep northward penetration moisture. dictated by changes circulation Indian Ocean. Our proposed consistent with recent, most storm ever observed region. findings advance new understanding natural variability region, substantial implications adaptation region’s critical infrastructure.

Preserving biodiversity under current and future climates: a case study

Aim The conservation of biological and genetic diversity is a major goal of reserve systems at local, regional, and national levels. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources suggests a 12% threshold (area basis) for adequate protection of biological and genetic diversity of a plant community. However, thresholds based on area may protect only a small portion ...

Intensified Arabian Sea tropical storms

Tropical cyclones over the Arabian Sea in the pre-monsoon season (May–June) have intensified since 1997 (ref. 1, Fig. 1a) owing to significant reductions in storm-ambient vertical wind shear (VWS) in the troposphere; these reductions have decreased on average by about 3m s from the pre-1997 epoch (1979–1997) to the recent epoch (1998–2010). The authors attribute the reduction of premonsoon VWS ...

Zoonoses in the Arabian Peninsula

The human population is rising and will soon reach 9 billion people. In parallel, the demand for animal protein is increasing and with it is the threat of zoonotic diseases. We must therefore be on our guard. The close association of people with animals promotes the opportunity for zoonotic infections and real danger may arise when animals are imported with no health background. Therefore, it i...

Regional modeling of large wildfires under current and potential future climates in Colorado and Wyoming, USA

Regional analysis of large wildfire potential given climate change scenarios is crucial to understanding areas most at risk in the future, yet wildfire models are not often developed and tested at this spatial scale. We fit three historical climate suitability models for large wildfires (i.e. ≥ 400 ha) in Colorado andWyoming using topography and decadal climate averages corresponding to wildfir...
